• How our coffee is roasted

How is your coffee roasted?

Everything is done on a small scale. We do not sell factory coffee but coffee that is carefully and skillfully prepared in a traditional drum roaster. The coffee is roasted in a 22kg drum roaster and we slowly roast the coffee, usually around 16 minutes or so depending on which coffee we are roasting.

Do you use profile roasting?

Definitely! All our coffee is roasted according to a profile which results in amazing consistency. Each coffee or blend has its own perfect profile. Many people roast coffee just by hand but we think this can lead to inconsistency.

We use a great software system that controls all aspects during the roast. This means that we can control exactly what is happening during the roast and that is very important.

Profile roasting also allows us to 'copy' a previous roast giving us, you guessed it, great consistency. And we can really control the roast, instead of just roasting to a colour or temperature, we can control how we want to get there. Of course we still have our roaster checking the coffee during the roast to make sure that everything is going according to plan.

Why do you roast only small batches?

A couple of reasons. First of all it allows us to roast many different coffees and roast it all fresh. Secondly it gives, once again, a great consistency.

Where is your coffee roasted?

All our coffees are roasted at the coffee roastery in Sheffield. Once the roast is finished we ship it directly to our customers for next day delivery. Now, that is fresh! And to prove that it is fresh we label each coffee with a roasting date.

Barista training"My partner and I had a wonderful Valentine's Barista training session at Absolute Coffee last Sunday in Halifax. Our trainer, Youri, was very friendly and taught us all about the coffee making process with infectious enthusiasm and good humour. After a very interesting talk-through on the lifecycle of coffee from the bean to the cup we got stuck in and started making our first espressos.

Due to Youri's very clear instruction and explanation on what makes a great espresso, we were pulling great shots in no time at all, with all our handiwork captured on Youri's camera!
Once Youri was happy that we had a good grasp of pulling consistent shots, we moved on to milk based drinks and were both delighted with the results we were getting. The day finished with us giving a good deal of time trying to perfect our Latté Art hearts...very appropriate for the day that was in it! We would thoroughly recommend the Barista training course to anyone who has an interest in learning how to make wonderful coffee.

Thank you again,
Cian & Niamh"
